How to Use BlockDay - Time Blocking: A Beginner's Guide

Jeetech Studio · 2026-11-02

What BlockDay is

BlockDay - Time Blocking is a time block planner for Android. Instead of a long to-do list, you give each part of your day its own block on a timeline. You decide what happens, and when.

The app is built for speed. According to the store listing, you can plan within 60 seconds of first launch, with no account required. It works offline, and your schedule, templates and stats stay on your device by default.

Getting started

  1. Install BlockDay from Google Play and open it.
  2. You'll land on a vertical 24-hour timeline. There's no sign-up step to get through.
  3. Choose a snapping interval of 5, 10 or 15 minutes. This controls how precisely your blocks line up.
  4. Drag on the timeline to make your first block.

That's the whole setup. You can start planning right away.

Main workflows

Plan a day

  1. Drag on the timeline from the start time to the end time of an activity.
  2. Name the block and pick a color. The listing says there are accessible presets and custom hues.
  3. Add one or more tags if you want. Tags make the stats more useful later.
  4. Repeat until your day is mapped out.

Blocks can run overnight. To change one, stretch it to resize it or drag it to move it.

Stay on track during the day

  • Tap Start when you begin a block and Done when you finish.
  • An Active Block banner shows what's happening now, what's next and how much time is left.
  • Reminders arrive as local notifications on time. You can add pre-alert nudges, snooze for 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, or skip a block.
  • If you want a stronger cue, turn on the optional full-screen alert.

Edit when your day changes

Real days rarely go to plan, so BlockDay has quick editing tools:

  • Duplicate a block
  • Select several blocks and move them together
  • Rubber-band shift to push the schedule along
  • Gap-fill drag to close empty spaces
  • A context menu for other actions

If you make a mistake, Undo and Redo are available, with no limit within a session. Destructive actions ask for confirmation.

Save a routine as a template

  1. Build a day you like, such as a typical weekday.
  2. Save the set of blocks as a template. It keeps durations, colors, tags and nudges.
  3. Choose whether it applies to weekdays or weekends.
  4. Apply it to a new day. Templates can be stacked without overwriting what's already there.

Review your time

The insights screen shows time by color and tag, planned versus completed, streaks, and daily or weekly summaries. You can export a day or week as a PNG or CSV file. A manual local backup and restore file is also available.

Tips for beginners

  • Start small. Block out just the key parts of tomorrow, then add detail as you get used to it.
  • Use color consistently. If work is always one color and rest is another, the stats will be easier to read.
  • Add tags early. Tags are what let the insights show where your time went.
  • Turn on pre-alert nudges if you find transitions between tasks hard. The listing describes ADHD-friendly cues, including the banner and a pre-transition ramp.
  • Save a template for any day you repeat often.
  • Check accessibility settings. There's a high-contrast theme, a large text option, and a dark mode that follows your system.

Free and Pro

Per the listing, the free version covers core time blocking, templates, reminders, the Active Block banner, basic insights, PNG/CSV export, backup/restore, dark mode, large text and undo/redo. It may show minimal ads, but never during an active block.

Pro adds advanced analytics (7/30/90-day trends), customizable widgets and theme packs, a higher quota for the AI Plan Helper, and optional cross-device cloud sync with two-way calendar integration. Pro comes as a one-time purchase or a subscription.
